Scar Article featured in The Daily Telegraph / Courier Mail Sunday 24 June 2007

Skin Needling is also known as Facial Mesotherapy or Collagen Induction Therapy.  It has similar results to Laser, Chemical Peels and Dermabrasion but is far less invasive, which translates to a far lower risk of complications and quick recovery time.  Improvement in the appearance of scars and lines is achieved through a series of Skin Needling treatments, spaced 2-3 months apart.

    How is it done?

Skin Needling and Facial Mesotherapy is most easily performed using a Skin Roller. The Skin Roller causes multiple tiny pin point puncture wounds to the dermis. This dermal damage induces the release of growth factors that stimulate the production of new collagen and elastin.  New collagen production is the object of ALL skin resurfacing and rejuvenation treatments.
Skin Needling creates dermal damage without the removal of the healthy epidermis, which happens with other resurfacing techniques.

Because the epidermis is left intact, the healing period is rapid. The skin does not risk permanent structural damage, sun sensitivity, skin colour loss or hyper-pigmentation.

    What are Skin Rollers?
The Clearskincare Skin Roller range is unique, they are constructed of the finest quality stainless steel needles mounted in the highest quality plastic autoclavable (resistant to 134ºC temperatures) rollers and handle. Used daily and cared for as directed by the Clearskincare homecare rollers will last for 12 months.

Clearskincare Skin Rollers come in 5 sizes (0.3mm, 48 & 96 needle 0.75mm and 48 & 96 needle 2mm needle lengths) and the needle gauge (0.25mm).  The needle gauge and needle lengths are optimised to produce maximum new healthy collagen and elastin, minimise downtime and discomfort and not cause any new scarring.

The 2mm Clearskincare Skin Rollers are only used for in clinic treatments.

What areas of the skin can be treated?
Skin Needling can be performed on the face, body and scalp as well as sensitive areas that other treatments have to avoid, such as below the eyes, the neck and the back of hands.

Are only in clinic Skin Needling treatments available?
Skin needling using Clearskincare skin rollers can be performed in clinic (for moderate to severe indented and acne scarring and severe ageing sun damaged skin) or homecare (for light to moderate indented and acne scarring and ageing sun damaged skin).

Healing - How much time does it take to recover from a Skin Needling Treatment?
After in clinic Skin Needling treatments the skin is red and swollen for one to two days with a light grazing over the treated area appearing on day two.  Most patients are able to return to work and normal activities within 48 hours of treatment. Multiple treatments are usually necessary to achieve significant improvement in the appearance and depth of lines and scars.  Treatment effects are cumulative and will usually be seen within 6-8 weeks of each treatment.  In comparison to prolonged recovery time from laser resurfacing and chemical peels, the short recovery following Skin Needling makes it an excellent alternative method of improving lines and scars.

After homecare Skin Needling there is pain (just a light to strong prickling sensation) or swelling or downtime, normal daily functions can be resumed within 15 minutes of treatment.

What kind of results can be expected?
Results vary between patients, with some patients achieving 90%+ improvement in scarring and others, less than 50%. All patients achieve some improvement.

All patients require multiple treatments to achieve satisfactory results.

    How much does it cost?
In clinic Skin Needling treatments does vary according to the type of treatment required and the extent of scarring.  Skin Needling treatments at Clearskincare Clinics cost between $70 and $275 per treatment.

Homecare Clearskincare skin rollers vary from $80 to $100 and used daily and cared for as directed will last for 12 months.
