Glycolic acid is a light to medium AHA acid that is derived from sugar cane. While it is a bit harsher than lactic acid, glycolic acid is a good 'all-around' acid for improving the appearance of a number of skin symptoms. Glycolic acid skin peels are used by cosmetic physicians and dermatologists to reduce wrinkles and lines, eliminate acne (all levels), smooth out skin texture, reduce skin discoloration (such as liver spots) and even skin tone. Glycolic acid also has the benefits of making your skin look smoother, fresher, and more youthful. Glycolic acid has few disadvantages as it rarely causes excessive swelling, redness or peeling.

Salicylic acid is derived from willow tree bark. Unlike lactic acid and glycolic acid, salicylic acid is a Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA). BHA acids are oil soluble, as such they are mostly used to penetrate deep into the pores for removal of oils that contribute to breakouts and acne. Salicylic acid is best used as a first step in a daily or weekly exfoliation process for breakout prone skin types, it will remove all the oils from the skin, making it easier for an AHA acid such as glycolic acid to completely cleanse and exfoliate the skin. The one advantage that salicylic acid skin peels have over lactic acid or glycolic acid is that they are self neutralising. As salicylic acid solution evaporates, the acid itself neutralises.

Lactic acid skin peels are a mild AHA acid that is derived from milk. A much weaker acid than glycolic acid, lactic acid skin peels are most commonly used for the removal of sun spots, hyperpigmentation, liver spots and other skin discolorations and is suitable for all skin types. Lactic acid skin peels are also recommended for the reduction of Rosacea, as it is the mildest of the AHA peels.

Vitamin C ascobic acid skin peels, are the mildest of these skin peels and are an excellent introduction to peeling for people who are a little nervous about using acid skin peels. There is minimal discomfort from pure Vitamin C peels and they can be reapplied weekly. Using pure Vitamin C (ascorbic acid), a powerful anti oxidant, will assist in the protection of your skin from free radical damage associated with everyday living, will reduce the appearance of age lines and smooth wrinkles.
